Stay Safe -and Cool-by the Pool

Swimming is one of the greatest pastimes we look forward to during our short summers. While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of being able to go for a dip, being safe around the pool at any age is priority number one.

It’s important for pool owners to be constantly diligent. Drowning cases most often occur when a caregiver isn’t paying attention – and it can happen in a second. There are a few simple ways to keep everyone safe in your backyard pool:

  • The pool should be fenced in and have a self-closing or self-latching gate. Keep the gate closed at all times. There are also alarms that can be installed to indicate if the gate has been opened.
  • Always ensure children swim with an adult, swimmers swim with a buddy, and do not serve food or drinks in glassware around the pool.
  • Unless the pool is very large and has a deep end, do not allow diving and tell swimmers they must enter feet-first at all times.
  • Make sure all life-saving devices (such as a pole or flotation ring) are readily accessible. Keep them mounted on the fence next to the pool for quick access.
  • Always keep the pool deck clear of toys and any debris.
  • In the case of aboveground permanent pools, remove the steps or ladder when the pool isn’t being used.
  • Provide lifejackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs) to weak swimmers and always provide adult supervision.
  • Never leave children unattended. If you need to get something from inside your house, take the children with you unless there is another adult present outside.

By enforcing your pool rules, you’ll ensure that all swimmers will be safe each and every time they go for a dip.
